Best Time to Travel

The best time to travel to the Dominican Republic is ... Almost always.
Some tourists may wonder when is the best time to visit the Dominican Republic?

Basically you can say: The island of Hispaniola offers a holiday destination that you can visit all year round. Still, there is such a thing as a high season, that starts in December and ends in April. The main reason for this strongest travel wave of the year is probably that many simply want to escape the cold in America, Canada and also in Europe. Instead of snow and ice, many vacationers prefer to enjoy a tropical breeze and the warm waters of the Caribbean. Even in the north on the Atlantic coast there is bathing weather all year round. There are two special attractions that occur during this time: the mating season of the humpback whales in Samaná Bay (That starts between mid-December through late March) and the Caribbean Carnival that is held in February. Many others want to escape the traditional Christmas and swap Christmas trees for coconut trees, plus many thousands of Dominican tourists come from abroad to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.

The Dominican Republic has the advantage of having an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) all year round. In summer (May - October) it is of course a few degrees warmer. Then the average daytime temperatures are 30.5 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), at night they never drop below 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperatures often seem higher due to high humidity. Above all, the traveler should bear this in mind when choosing a public taxi car (carrito publico) or (guagua) public bus for passenger transport. They usually don’t have air conditioning.

Summer, sun and sunshine, of course there is also rain. In recent years there have been periods with a lot of rain, sometimes November was completely rainy, then again in January or February. Officially, the most rainfall occurs in May. But often there are only short (albeit heavy) tropical rain showers. The beach and the streets dry up quickly. The year 2015 was characterized by a long-lasting drought, the hurricane season was also weak and thus the precipitation that tropical storms and cyclones bring with them did not occur here. Maybe the summer season (low season) is the best time to visit the Dominican Republic. Apart from the holiday times in the individual countries, there are many special offers, both in terms of airfare and in hotels.

The hurricane season is likely to play another factor for vacationers. It starts on June 1st and ends on November 30th. Statistically, the probability of tropical storms and hurricanes increases from the end of August to mid-October. Meteorologists usually report 2-3 months in advance whether the season is going to be strong or weak, but one shouldn't be too precise with the weather forecast. The “El Niño” phenomenon plays an important role.
