In Costa Rica, offshore fishing is one of the country’s main attractions. The billfish action is of world-class caliber. In the same areas where billfish are found, it is also common to encounter schools of yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi.
The season runs year-round, with some general guidelines. The highest numbers of sailfish are typically found from December through the end of April. Marlin fishing is usually strongest during the rainy season, from May to December. Tuna are abundant all year, and mahi-mahi are more common from September to January. However, it is possible to catch any species at any time of the year.
Most of the fishing is done by trolling. It is common to run between 20–35 miles before we begin fishing. Thanks to our central location, we can fish both around Cabo Blanco and south toward Quepos, in the same areas as the boats from Los Sueños. The exact location depends on reports from previous days.
We use a mix of dead bait, dead bait combined with artificial lures, and artificial lures in our spread. If live bait is available or we catch some offshore, we will also use it. We also run several teasers for the bait-and-switch technique, which is an exciting experience.
We will pick you up at the Paquera ferry landing or another agreed location between 6:00 am and 7:00 am. Depending on the bite, we head to our chosen starting point and set the spread. If we encounter tuna, we may switch from the standard billfish spread to a tuna spread or use casting gear to target fish on the surface. During the day, you can enjoy snacks, fresh fruit, lunch, and beverages, including beer. We return to the drop-off point between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
Boats are assigned based on availability and group size. You can also secure the fishing yacht exclusively for your group during the booking process.
